NDIS

National Disability Insurance Scheme

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is the new way of providing individualised support for people with disability, their families and carers. The NDIS is insurance, which gives us all peace of mind. Disability can affect anyone and having the right support makes a big difference.

The NDIS provides eligible people a flexible, whole-of-life approach to the support they need to pursue their goals. It also fosters social inclusion and economic participation.

The first stage of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) began in Tasmania on 1 July 2013 for young people, aged 15 to 24.

On 1 July 2016, the NDIS began to roll out based on age groups.

The NDIS will progressively roll out across Tasmania, with more than 10,600 expected NDIS participants expected by 2019.

The NDIS in Tasmania is being introduced in stages because it’s a big change and it is important to get it right and make it sustainable. By 1 July 2019, all eligible Tasmanians, aged 0 to 64, will become NDIS participants.

If you currently receive disability services and are eligible to enter the NDIS, you will be contacted before you transition. If you are currently not receiving support, you may still be able to access NDIS.

In the Huon and Channel region, NDIS works with Baptcare to roll out the NDIS. Baptcare employs Local Area Coordinators to develop NDIS funded plans. Local Area Coordinator – Community  Mirjam Holthuis helps people accessing NDIS and to create more inclusive communities. You can contact Mirjam by mobile: 0427 325 264 or email: mholthuis@baptcare.org.au.

Early Childhood Early Intervention (ECEI)

The ECEI approach supports children aged 0-6 years who have a developmental delay or disability and their families/carers. The ECEI approach supports families to help children develop the skills they need to take part in daily activities and achieve the best possible outcomes throughout their life. The ECEI partner for the Huon and Channel region is Baptcare.

The NDIS has engaged Early Childhood Partners around Australia to deliver the ECEI approach. Early Childhood Partners are experienced in providing early childhood intervention.

You can contact an Early Childhood Partner if concerns about your child’s development have been identified.

As every child is different, your Early Childhood Partner will tailor support to your child’s individual needs and circumstances. Your Early Childhood Partner will provide you with information.

They may also:

  • Connect you and your child with the most appropriate supports in your area, such as the community health centre, educational setting and playgroup
  • Provide some short-term early intervention where it has been identified as the most appropriate support

Help you to request NDIS access if your child requires longer-term early childhood intervention supports. If your child becomes an NDIS participant the Early Childhood Partner will work with you to develop an NDIS plan.

For the Huon and Channel region call Baptcare on 1800 171 233 or go to: www.ndis.gov.au
